'Eggs'ellent Meal for Polar Bears

P

atrick Jagielski, a M.Sc. student at the University of Windsor, explains his research on how he is quantifying the energetic cost and benefit of polar bears foraging on common eider eggs, a culturally significant seaduck that breeds in large colonies. Polar bears are being forced on land earlier in the spring, due to earlier sea-ice melt, and this is coinciding with the common eider breeding schedule. Bears are now taking advantage of this opportunity by gorging themselves on eggs. But is the pursuit of this new diet worth the effort?
